Many people mouth criticism of their attorneys. In turn half of them ‘lost’, and the other half didn’t win, so is anyone objective? Nevertheless, the sheer volume of dissatisfaction and degree of invective should give people pause to think if this is the right arena for them. I do believe that there are good trial divorce attorneys attempting to combat the dual challenges of an avaricious opponent and a creaking legal system. However, even if its the creaking Court system that’s at fault, it doesn’t change the consequences. Clients borne of litigation suffer inordinately.
I recently came across a book penned by a dissatisfied client in Rockland County [The Divorce, Burger, 2013]. Its not written by a professional, and it’s full of vitriol. One is aware one may be reading a very one sided expose. However why did someone go to these lengths? In any event it may be useful night fodder, though its in no way the expose’ to change the legal profession that “The CItadel” [AJ Cronin 1937] was in the medical arena in the early twentieth century.
TIP: IF in court, besides excellent references, make sure there is a rapport with the attorney. Also query if there is easy communication with the attorney in between Court appearances, whether by email or phone, and the response time..
Mediation by contrast to Court seems to have many happy clients, though they should have been equally dissatisfied. Pause for thought.
